I was introduced to photography by my 7th grade science teacher who taught science through photography including everything from light, optics, chemistry – you name it really. I was immediately and irrevocably hooked. From that point on, it was rare to see me anywhere without a camera and I quickly came to realize the power that an artist’s voice can have. In 1991, I was accepted to a summer session at Oxford University to study under acclaimed British photographer Julia Parry. This event forever changed my life and redefined my art. It was there that I was introduced to fine art documentary photography. After leaving Oxford, I continued my studies under Bill Jay, Jack Stuhler, Eric Kronengiold and Mark Klett ar Arizona State University and assisted for Magnum Photographer David Hurn. These photographer were instrumental in helping me define my style and hone my voice.
In the intervening years, I have worked, taught, and exhibited widely. One prime example of my fine art work was a series called “An American Hog Killing” where I photographed a family of subsistence farmers. This series won the 2002 International Art Competition in Soho, NY and an Honorable Mention at the International Photography competition in Los Angeles, CA. I was Associate Professor of Photography at Winston-Salem State University for 5 years and have continued with private instruction since that time. Shooting weddings and portraits has taken me all over North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and South Carolina.
I live in Greensboro, NC with my husband, Adam, and our son, Jobe (a.k.a. “The Boy”).
